The Rise of Independent Bookstores in 2026
Against all odds, independent bookstores are thriving. Here's how they're adapting and growing.

Ten years ago, the conventional wisdom held that independent bookstores were doomed. Amazon would sweep them away; e-readers would replace paper. Both predictions turned out to be wrong.
In 2026, independents are not merely surviving, they're growing. The American Booksellers Association reports a fifth consecutive year of net store openings. Many of these new shops are smaller, more curated, and more deeply embedded in their neighborhoods than the chains they replaced.
What changed? Readers, it turns out, want context. They want a knowledgeable bookseller, a thoughtful display, an event with the author. They want their bookstore to feel like a third place. The shops that have leaned into community, book clubs, signings, kid story-times, late-night readings, are the ones thriving.
